L4 and L5 – The Most Common Area of Back Pain

Today, we're skipping down the spine to discuss the L4 and L5 vertebrae, which are located in your lower back, or lumbar spine - and the most common area of back pain among my patients.

L4 and L5 are crucial for weight-bearing and allowing your torso to move in multiple directions. The nerves that exit here are primarily responsible for the health and function of the prostate (in men), the bladder, the large intestine, and the major muscles in the legs and feet.

Their role is essential for mobility, stability, and ensuring proper nerve communication to the lower body and the vital pelvic organs.

When L4 or L5 is misaligned, or subluxated, it can put pressure on the nerve roots, leading to common issues like:

  • Sciatica (pain radiating down the back of the leg).
  • Low back pain that may travel into the buttocks or feet.
  • Bladder difficulties or issues with the large intestine (e.g., constipation).
  • Weakness, pain, or cramping in the legs, ankles, or feet.

Restoring the proper alignment of L4/L5 helps relieve this pressure and supports the health of your legs and pelvic organs.

Stay well adjusted,

Dr. Dan Kammer
