In the ever-expanding world of nutritional supplements, for 30+ years we've heard about glucosamine and chondroitin as possible options to help slow the loss of cartilage (our cushions) within the joints and to reduce joint pain. In the unregulated, over-the-counter, joint-pain- supplement world, this combo has been the kingpin for decades.
To simplify:
- The research is generally favorable for mild to moderate pain relief for some people.
- The research is generally favorable for mild functional improvement for some people, particularly with knee function.
IMPORTANT: You will only know if it helps you after you have taken it for at least a couple of months.
Try to find a brand with MSM (an important sulfur compound) in it.
Take hyaluronic acid also.
If you Google it and read all the different reputable sites and then you read the dozens of studies that have been done about the dozens of studies, you’ll either take it or you won’t. Try it.
I know we all get tired of adding one more thing to our list of self-care items, but the glucosamine and chondroitin (plus MSM and hyaluronic acid) combination is worth it.
Beyond the knees and hips and shoulders, the 23 discs and dozens of spinal joints may appreciate a bit of a nutritional boost. And of course, exercise and go to the chiropractor!
