I hope this warm, sunny day finds you well, and that you are able to spend time outside enjoying it.
The majority of my patients have been given a prescription for steroids at some point in their life. Yep, even me. Steroids are often utilized with episodes of severe spinal pain, as well as a huge variety of conditions that involve inflammation or may involve inflammation.
There are two main types of steroids. Anabolic steroids that artificially stimulate growth, like we’ve seen with some (more than a few) professional athletes and maybe a few freakishly large wrestlers. The builder steroids can also be very helpful for a variety of conditions and diseases that require that course.
The second steroid group is most of what we have taken. Corticosteroids include prednisone and cortisone. This group is said to “shrink” things. What this group does is restrict the body’s inflammatory response to irritation. It does this by artificially inhibiting the immune system from reacting or overreacting. So, ultimately-- anti-inflammatories. They can be very effective, but consistent or long-term use is not an option as the side-effects are too numerous and include organ and joint issues.
Chiropractic care is often associated with pain relief because the adjustment can also have an anti-inflammatory effect at or near the cause of the problem. Beyond that, functionally sound joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons experience less inflammation and recover more quickly when injured and inflamed.
