Neck Hump, Dowagers Hump, Hunchback

Where the lower neck meets the upper back is an area that chiropractors refer to as the cervicothoracic (neck-thorax) junction. It is an important area for postural control of the head and neck and also is another area of nerve supply to the arms and hands. This area almost always gets some attention when you come to this office.

This is also the part of the spine where the dreaded “hump”, or “hunchback” can form. There are several terms for the “hump” and several causes of the “hump”. The most accurate and accepted term is the term “kyphosis”-- excessive posterior curvature of the upper back producing a rounded appearance.

The most common cause of kyphosis is postural weakness, followed by  genetic abnormalities, osteoporosis and trauma.

Kyphosis can lead to pain, breathing problems, reduced mobility or even pinched nerves. Depending on the source of the kyphosis, chiropractic care can often make a difference– if not to prevent kyphosis, then to ensure that we halt any progression.

If you have any questions about thoracic kyphosis, feel free to let me know during your next visit.
